UzhNU to coordinate large-scale all-Ukrainian environmental campaign in Transcarpathia

The five biggest risks for the world are environmental. That is why the world community is increasingly turning to popularizing eco-trends. One of these is large-scale greening of the planet. Our country is not standing aside – it is initiating the national project “Greening of Ukraine”. In Transcarpathia, it is coordinated by Uzhgorod National University. On March 11, a corresponding Memorandum was signed in the premises of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, uniting representatives of government bodies, education, business, and the public around this issue.

A million trees, that is how many they plan to plant, will become a record, because no one has done this in the history of Ukraine. Transcarpathia became the fifteenth region to sign the corresponding memorandum. The cooperation involves the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration, the Transcarpathian Regional Council, the Transcarpathian Regional Department of Forestry and Hunting, the Rotary Club of Uzhhorod, and the Uzhhorod City Council. The project is coordinated by Uzhhorod National University. Anna Melehanych, coordinator of the Greening of Transcarpathia project, director of the Resource Center for Sustainable Development, says: “The level of environmental awareness among the population is growing and it is nice that the university managed to unite efforts in our region – therefore, everyone understands the importance of the topic. Thanks to such versatile cooperation, there is an opportunity to involve people in a common good cause. The point is not only to plant a tree, but also to instill a love for nature and an understanding of responsibility for it. Now we have coordinators in almost all districts of Transcarpathia – these are our graduates and students. The planted trees will be on the balance of the region, the city, the university or even a specific condominium, so they will not just be planted – they will be looked after. ”

In Uzhhorod, 4 areas have been allocated for planting young trees – this is the territory near the central building of UzhNU at BAM, as well as three parks: Pidzamkovy, Peremohy (Kirpichka) and Bozdosky. Planting materials will be provided by the Transcarpathian Regional Department of Forestry and Hunting, and part of the seedlings will be provided by the university itself. In particular, beech, oak, maple, sycamore, etc. will be planted.

During the signing of the memorandum, the rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka noted: “Of course, it is gratifying that young people are actively applying to participate in the action – first of all, these are our students. They want to help restore the ecosystem and preserve values. We are joining the action in our city at all designated locations.”

It is worth adding that the event was planned for March 21, but due to the introduction of quarantine it was postponed to April. The date will be announced later.
